How to Keep an Iron Fence Looking New Almost Forever

Iron fencing is a great way to spruce up your property and make it look great. They not only offer security, they also offer beauty. However, to keep them looking beautiful for many years, some maintenance is required.

Here are a few important top to keep your iron fences and gates looking beautiful for, well, almost forever!

Be proactive and protective. Wrought iron fences are susceptible to rust when exposed to harsh weather elements such as rain, snow, and humidity. While this may not be too much of a problem in some areas, such as California and Arizona, in most areas of the country climate is a major problem for fences. You can apply a coating of protective wax or protective sealant to help prevent rust. If the fence is near a pool, it still needs protection even if you live in an area without much precipitation or humidity.

Paint the Fence. Painting the fence will also help protect it from the harsh elements. Paint will minimize oxidation and reduce the possibility of rust. Applying a new coat of paint every few years is extra protection against the elements and rust.

Inspect the Fence. It is crucial to inspect your fence on a regular basis. If the paint is chipped, it allows for the possible development of rust. When inspecting the fence, look for any signs of rust, chipped paint, loose footings, or issues with any of the gate hardware. It doesn’t take long to do an inspection, but it will help keep your fence looking great for a very long time.

Fix the Fence. If you do find any problems during the inspection, fix them right away. Procrastination may cost you money. Most repair are minor and require very little time or money. However, if you let a small rust spot grow in to a large rust spot, it becomes much more expensive to repair. Small rust spots can be easily repair with some sandpaper or steel wool, and then some sealant or new paint. Large rust spots will require much more time and you may even need to call a fencing specialist to save your fence.

Gates can add to or subtract from the value and aesthetics of your property. Wrought iron fencing is an ideal choice for many homes because it adds beauty and security. Though wrought iron is relatively low maintenance, they do require some preventative maintenance to keep them looking great for a very long time…almost forever.
